Author self-citation policies, the influence on journals’ impact factors, and self-citation rate in general surgery

  • Incongruous author self-referencing is an increasing scientific form of malpractice.
  • Similarly, excessive journal self-citation may hinder an attempt to boost the journal’s impact factor.
  • Only 25% of general surgery journals have policies for discouraging author self-citation.
  • The presence of policies is not associated with differences in impact factors or journal self-citation rates.
