Selected commentary to “Esophageal sphincter device for gastroesophageal reflux disease”

Up to 40 % of patients with typical symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are refractory to pharmacologic treatment with proton-pump inhibitors (PPI) despite dose optimization [1]. The laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication, the gold standard of surgical therapy, is largely underused and commonly reserved to patients with severe complications of the disease. This leaves a significant gap in the treatment continuum for GERD in the current clinical practice [2].
