Solitary Rectal Ulcer Syndrome in Children. A Report of Three Cases

Abstract

Solitary rectal ulcer syndrome (SRUS) is a rare condition in children. It is well recognised in the adult literature. We report our experience with 3 patients; two boys presented at a very young age (18 and 24 months, respectively) with a clinical picture simulating inflammatory bowel diseases. The other patient was a fifteen-year-old girl presenting with severe rectal stricture as a result of the syndrome, which is the first to be reported in the paediatric literature.

L'ulcère rectal solitaire de l'enfant (SRUS) est rare. Il est bien connu dans la littérature adulte. Nous rapportons notre expérience de 3 cas; deux garçons présentaient un très jeune âge (18 et 24 mois) avec un aspect simulant une maladie inflammatoire du tube digestif. L'autre patient était une fille de quinze ans qui se présentait avec une sténose rectale sévère comme conséquence du syndrome, ce qui est le premier cas rapporté dans la littérature pédiatrique.

Resumen

El síndrome de úlcera rectal solitaria (SRUS) es raro en niños aunque es bien conocido en la literatura adulta. Presentamos nuestra experiencia con tres niños. Dos varones se presentaron muy tempranamente (18 y 24 meses respectivamente) con un cuadro clínico evocador de una enfermedad inflamatoria intestinal. El otro paciente fue una niña de 15 años que se presentó con estrechez rectal severa como resultado del síndrome que es el primero presentado en la literatura pediátrica.

Zusammenfassung

Das solitäre Rektumulkussyndrom ist im Kindesalter äußerst selten. In der Erwachsenenliteratur ist es hingegen bekannt. Im vorliegenden Fallbericht werden 3 Patienten vorgestellt. Zwei Knaben im sehr jungen Alter von 18 und 24 Monaten kamen wegen des Verdachtes auf entzündliche Darmerkrankung zur Aufnahme. Der 3. Patient war ein 15 Jahre altes Mädchen mit einer schweren Rektumstenose als Folge des Ulkussyndroms. Diese Komplikation wird erstmalig in der pädiatrischen Literatur beschrieben.
