Abstract
Abstract. With a prevalence of 10 – 15 %, psychological disorders are common among infants, toddlers, and preschool children. They are heterogeneous and encompass externalizing disorders such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorders, as well as internalizing disorders, such as depression and anxiety disorders. They are characterized by high comorbidity rates and can persist and chronify. In addition, some disorders occur only in young children and can be incapacitating. In addition, the relationship to caregivers – and any identification or relationship disorders – play an important role for young children. As the diagnostic criteria of the classical classification systems ICD-10 and DSM-5 are not sensitive enough, the DC: 0 – 5TM: Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood: Zero to Three (DC: 0 – 5) system was developed specifically for the age group from birth to 5 years. The aim of this special edition is to provide an overview of the DC: 0 – 5. The first paper reviews the diagnostic process. The second review deals with the structure and innovations of the DC: 0 – 5. An original study analyzed the differences between DC: 0 – 5 and ICD-10 diagnoses in a naturalistic setting. A last original study focusses on the psychometric properties of the SIVA 0 – 6 structured interview, which also codes for DC: 0 – 5. In conclusion, the DC: 0 – 5 is the currently most exact classification system for the diagnosis of mental disorders in young children in clinical practice, as well as in research.
