Abstract

The 16-item Dysfunctional Beliefs and Attitudes About Sleep scale (DBAS-16) according to Morin et al. is a self-report questionnaire for assessing sleep-related cognitions. Studies confirm the reliability, validity, and clinical utility of the original English version. In the present article, the German version of the questionnaire, the “Meinungen-zum-Schlaf-Fragebogen” (MZS), and the first results regarding its psychometric properties are presented. In a sample of insomniacs and normal controls (n=301), the reliability of the MZS and three factor-analytically derived subscales (concerning beliefs in the long-term negative consequences of insomnia, beliefs in a biological causation of insomnia, and short-term effects of insomnia on everyday functioning) proved to be satisfactory, and evidence for their validity is reported. Furthermore, sleep-related cognitions showed differential relationships to established clinical measures. The results of the study suggest that the MZS is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing sleep-related cognitions.
