Abstract
There is no doubt that cancer patients have to be on a well-balanced diet with macronutrients and micronutrients. A defined supplementation of deficiencies should begin with a detailed and continuous consultation on nutrition. Oral supplements should be given when necessary and if this is not sufficient parenteral nutrition is mandatory. During active antitumor therapy with chemotherapy, radiation or targeted therapy, deficiencies also have to be supplemented. The uncontrolled and uncritical use of nutritional supplements, high dose vitamins and trace elements is not supported by results from studies. However, there are preclinical and clinical data which show that antioxidants and other micronutrients can compromise antitumor therapy. Complex nutritional supplements should therefore be avoided even when they seem practical to the patient and doctor.
