Die forensische Odonto-Stomatologie ist als interdisziplinäres Fachgebiet fester Bestandteil der Routine bei der Identifizierung unbekannter Toter oder Analyse von Bissspuren. Insbesondere der Einsatz von spezialisierten Zahnärzten bei zahlreichen Massenkatastrophen hat sich bewährt. Die hohe Individualspezifität des menschlichen Gebisses ermöglicht in solchen Fällen eine sichere Identifizierung. Wichtig ist es dabei zu beachten, dass eine exakte Befunddokumentation in der Regel nur nach anatomisch korrekter Entnahme der Kiefer möglich ist. Fehlermöglichkeiten bestehen insbesondere durch international verbreitete unterschiedliche Zahnklassifikationen und häufig schlecht erkennbare zahnfarbene Restaurationen. Zusätzliche Untersuchungsmöglichkeiten, wie der Einsatz von bildgebenden Verfahren oder Altersschätzung, vervollständigen die Befundung. Selbstverständlich muss dabei auch immer an die Möglichkeiten der DNA-Analyse gedacht und entsprechende Untersuchungsmaterialien gesichert werden. Die Analyse von Bissspuren erfordert ebenfalls eine korrekte Sicherung mit verschiedenen Methoden. Um Fehler zu vermeiden, sollten nach den 1990 herausgegebenen Richtlinien des American Board of Forensic Odontostomatology (ABFO) gearbeitet werden

Forensic Odontostomatology represents an interdisciplinary component of medico-legal casework to identify unknown bodies or analyse bite marks. The cooperation with specialised dentists in mass disaster victim indentification is well established. The high potential of individualisation of the human teeth usually leads to reliable identification. It is impotant to note that an exact documentation of the findings can only be achieved by performing a correct explantation of the jaws. Potential errors may be obtained due to different international classifications of the teeth as well as a difficult recognition of fillings having the same color of the tooth. Additional investigations such as imaging methods or age estimation complete the findings. To ensure DNA analysis it is of course always necessary to secure several tissues from the body. The investigation of bite marks requires also the exact documentation with different methods. To prevent mistakes it is recommended to follow the guidelines of the American Board of Forensic Odontostomatology (ABFO) which were published in 1990.
