Silicone Oil in Vitreoretinal Surgery

Part of the book series: Monographs in Ophthalmology ((MIOP,volume 12))

Abstract

Ever since Cibis first introduced silicone oil (SO) intraocularly to treat complicated retinal detachment (1962), polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) has been practically the only silicone oil used for this purpose. Reports on intraocular application of other types of SO, e.g. fluorinated SO or phenyl SO, are few, and the results are still inconclusive.
