Abstract
SAD (seasonal affective disorder) is a subtype of depression, which starts when day-length shortens in October. This type of depression is characterized by hypersomnia, lack of concentration, loss of interest in work and social interaction, loss of libido and carbohydrate craving. 25% of the population in the USA are bothered by short winter days and loss of light due to seasonal changes. This can usually be tolerated, and only few of these people have to seek medical help [1,2,3,4].
