Zusammenfassung
Dr. Skoda’s private clinique, for diseases of the chest, is perhaps the best school for acquiring a knowledge of the diagnosis of such affections that the foreigner can visit. It is purely a stethoscopic clinique, recently established by the government, and is to be found in the vicinity of the Gebäranstalt. It contains two wards — male and female — with forty-two beds, solely for patients labouring under acute and chronic diseases of the chest, who are chosen from the wards of the general hospital for the purpose of instruction.

Der ausgezeichnete Dubliner Arzt und vielseitige Gelehrte Sir William Robert Willis Wilde (1815 bis 1876), dessen Name in der Geschichte der Augen-und Ohrenheilkunde fortlebt, machte in den Jahren 1840 und 1841 eine Studienreise nach dem Kontinent, wo er die berühmtesten medizinischen Schulen, namentlich Deutschlands, besuchte, um sich in seinen Spezialfächern noch zu vervollkommnen. Der alte Ruf der medizinischen Schule, noch mehr die Fülle des dort Gebotenen, bewogen ihn, in Wien am längsten zu verweilen, mit offenem Blick für alle Verhältnisse, nicht nur für die medizinischen Zustände, sondern für das gesamte geistige, politische, soziale und wirtschaftliche Leben der Kaiserstadt und des österreichischen Staates. Auf Grund des Selbst geschauten und Selbsterfahrenen, gestützt auf mündliche Erkundigungen und literarische Informationen, verfaßte er nach seiner Rückkehr in die Heimat, insbesondere für die konnationalen Kollegen, das umfangreiche Reisehandbuch „ Austria: its literary, scientific and medical institutions with notes upon the present state of science and a guide to the hospitals and sanatory establishements of Vienna“ und widmete es Friedrich Jäger und Robert Graves. Es ist uns leider hier nicht möglich, auf den reichen Inhalt des trefflichen, von gediegener, gewissenhafter Kritik erfüllten Werkes einzugehen, wir müssen uns damit bescheiden, aus der Schilderung des vormärzlichen medizinischen Wien bloß jenen Abschnitt herauszuheben, der als Gegenstück zu Wunderlichs Darstellung die Persönlichkeit und die Tätigkeit der Führer des medizinischen Jungwien, Skodas und Rokitanskys, lebendig vor das Auge führt.
There are but six pupils in each of Dr. Skoda’s four classes. Two of these classes attend in the forenoon, and two in the afternoon, three times a week.
It is remarkable that Dr. Skoda, in common with the other physicians and teachers of this great hospital, has very little private practice in Vienna; and the most eminent practitioners in that city are quite unconnected with hospitals. Dr. Skoda was originally one of the physicians to the general wards of the hospital, and his celebrity as a stethoscopist procured him this special clinique.
It has been increased from six hundred to this number since 1817.
