Zusammenfassung

Die Epidemiologie befasst sich mit der Verteilung von Krankheiten in Raum und Zeit und mit Faktoren, die diese Verteilung beeinflussen. Im Folgenden werden einige wichtige Begriffe der Epidemiologie definiert und erläutert. Häufig interessiert sich die Epidemiologie für Häufigkeit und Verteilung bestimmter Erkrankungen in kompletten Populationen (z. B. Bevölkerung). Da aber Kompletterhebungen in großen Populationen sehr aufwendig sind, wird häufig eine (oder mehrere) Stichprobe(n) gezogen, die für die zugrundeliegende Population repräsentativ sein soll. Ist die Stichprobe repräsentativ, können die ermittelten Ergebnisse auf die Population verallgemeinert werden. Wenn wir eine bestimmte Erkrankung in einer repräsentativen Bevölkerungsstichprobe erfassen wollen, ist es erforderlich, dass die Erkrankung genügend eindeutig definiert ist und Messinstrumente vorliegen, die diese Erkrankung reliabel und valide erfassen können. Bei einer leicht untergewichtigen Magersüchtigen, die auch auf Nachfragen ihre Erkrankung verleugnet, kann die Fallidentifikation schwierig werden.
