Lyme Borreliosis in Childhood and Pregnancy

  • Chapter
Aspects of Lyme Borreliosis

Abstract

Hitherto published reports on Lyme borreliosis in childhood deal mainly with single case observations. Only a few more comprehensive studies on pediatric patients have been published in Europe (Schaad et al. 1986; Christen et al. 1988; Naglo and Wide 1989; Huppertz 1990) and the USA (Steere et al. 1977; Williams et al. 1990). In addition to this material, our own results from a prospective, hospital-based, multicenter study are presented in this review. The methods of this study have been described in detail elsewhere (Christen et al. 1988 and 1990). Lyme borreliosis was diagnosed on the basis of the detection of specific antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi using an immunoglobulin M (IgM) capture assay developed by Wassmann et al. (1989) and an IgG enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) according to Eiffert et al. (1990). During the first 3 years of this study, 592 children were examined. The distribution of the disorders investigated and the relative frequency of Lyme borreliosis are presented in Table 1. Based on the literature and our own results, the following description of Lyme borreliosis in childhood stresses the differences between children and adults.
