Abstract
The linear pattern is characterised by the presence of lines in the lung parenchyma that often cross each other resulting in a netlike appearance which explains why this pattern is often also called the reticular pattern. It is especially the thickening of the pulmonary interstitium that will result in the appearance of linear and reticular opacities. This chapter explains how—and this is again based on the study of the appearance (smooth, irregular, etc.) and the distribution (relation to the components of the secondary pulmonary lobule) of the lines—the different types of lines can be recognised and which diseases can cause their presence.
