Abstract
Ureteral stent placement is not necessary following uncomplicated ureteroscopy, as stenting in such cases subjects the patient to stent-related symptoms but does not reduce the incidence of postoperative complications, including unplanned medical visits and readmissions. The utility of ureteral stent placement depends on what constitutes uncomplicated ureteroscopy. In this commentary, I argue that uncomplicated ureteroscopy includes a large portion of these procedures and that efforts can be made to increase the likelihood that the ureteroscopy is an uncomplicated one, such that ureteral stent placement is unnecessary following many ureteroscopies. Avoiding ureteral stent placement when it is not necessary saves time and money, and reduces patient suffering.
