Zusammenfassung

Die altersabhängige Makuladegeneration (AMD) ist eine komplexe Erkrankung mit genetischen, umweltbedingten und demographischen Risikofaktoren (► Kap. 3). In den vergangenen Jahren konnte der Nachweis geführt werden, dass entzündliche Prozesse einschließlich einer Dysregulation des Komplementsystems eine wesentliche Rolle bei der Pathogenese der AMD spielen. Polymorphismen in Genen, die für Proteine des Komplementsystems kodieren, beeinflussen die Prädisposition, eine AMD zu entwickeln. Diese Entdeckung trieb weitere Forschungen voran und führte letztlich zur Etablierung des Komplementsystems als Schlüsselkomponente in der Pathogenese der AMD [1].

Ein ähnlicher Text in englischer Sprache wurde in Graefe‘s Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology publiziert (Charbel Issa et al. (2011) The Significance of the Complement System for the Pathogenesis of Age-Related Macular Degeneration – Current Evidence and Translation into Clinical Application).
