Zusammenfassung
Stoffe oder Stoffgemische mit stimulierenden oder hemmenden Wirkungen auf das zentrale Nervensystem sind von der Pflanzenwelt in besonders reichem Umfange hervorgebracht worden. Sofern sich das Wirkprinzip auf stark wirkende und isolierbare Einzelstoffe, wie z. B. Morphin, Kokain oder Atropin zurückführen lässt, sind diese Pflanzen oder deren Zubereitungen nicht mehr Gegenstand der Phytotherapie (Abschnitt 1.2). Bezüglich der coffeinhaltigen Drogen wird auf den Abschnitt 3.2.1.1 vewiesen. Die verbleibenden Drogen wurden bisher meistens unter dem Oberbegriff „pflanzliche Beruhigungsmittel“ zusammengefasst. Kontrollierte Therapiestudien neueren Datums haben jedoch bei drei der psychotropen Phytopharmaka zu spezifischeren Anwendungsgebieten geführt. In diesem Sinne kann Ginkgo-Spezialextrakt heute als pflanzliches Antidementivum zur symptomatischen Behandlung von Hirnleistungsstörungen verstanden werden (Hartmann und Schulz, 1991; Schulz et al., 1997; Le Bars et al., 1997, Oken et al., 1998, Ernst und Pittler, 1999, ESCOP, 2003), Extrakte aus Johanniskraut haben sich als hochwirksam gegen depressive Verstimmungen und Depressionen erwiesen (Linde et al., 1996; Wong et al., 1998; Kasper, 2001; Schulz, 2002) und Extrakte aus Kava-Kava-Wurzeln können als pflanzliche Anxiolytika eingeordnet werden (Volz und Hänsel, 1994; Volz, 1997; Pittler und Ernst, 2000).
