Bei Kindern, die aus einem verwahrlosten oder extrem belastenden Elternhaus stammten, fiel dem großen Entwicklungspsychologen Réne Spitz auf, dass die Kinder häufig kleinwüchsig waren. Im Verhalten waren diese Kinder durch völlige Apathie gekennzeichnet, ein Syndrom, das heute als gelernte Hilflosigkeit bezeichnet wird.
