Zusammenfassung

Alterungsprozess. Altern ist ein Prozess, der mit dem Anfang des Lebens beginnt und mit dem Tod endet. Überlagert wird dieser langfristige Prozess durch Phasen von Wachstum, Entwicklung und Ausdifferenzierung. Jede Tierspezies hat eine genetisch festgelegte Lebensspanne. Eines der zellbiologischen Korrelate dieser genetisch definierten Lebensspanne ist die begrenzte Anzahl von Zellteilungszyklen, an deren Ende der Tod einer Zelle steht. Die Zahl der Zellteilungszyklen ist für jeden Zelltyp unterschiedlich. Nach jedem Zellteilungszyklus normaler Körperzellen werden die endständigen Chromosomenabschnitte, die Telomere, immer kürzer, sodass letztendlich keine Zellteilung mehr möglich ist. Außeneinflüsse (z. B. ionisierende Strahlen, Schadstoffeinwirkungen) und der Lebensstil des Individuums können das Potenzial seiner Lebensspanne modifizieren. Ein Ausdruck des Alterns ist die begrenzte Möglichkeit zur Zellteilung (Fosset 1998; Touitou u. Haus 1994). Das Altern eines Organismus ist auch durch seine eingeschränkte Fähigkeit zur Reparatur molekularer Mechanismen, u. a. auf der Ebene der genetischen Information und der Mitochondrien und durch seine zunehmende Unfähigkeit, schädliche freie Radikale abzufangen, gekennzeichnet.
