Wer an einer generalisierten Angststörung, kurz GAS, leidet, der fürchtet die Zukunft. Betroffene sorgen sich ständig um kleine Dinge, wie zu spät zu kommen, um schreckliche Dinge, wie seine Kinder zu verlieren, ja sie sorgen sich darum, dass sie sich sorgen. Die GAS ist keine seltene Störung, scheint aber in der Praxis selten vorzukommen, und doch ist sie deutlich häufiger als die Panikstörung. Wie kommt das? Zum einen ist die GAS nicht einfach zu diagnostizieren; ihr Hauptmerkmal, die Sorgen, kommen auch bei anderen Störungen vor. Zudem treten Sorgen auch auf, wenn keine Störung vorliegt, jeder kennt Sorgen. Zum zweiten ist die Komorbiditätsrate sehr hoch, und andere Störungen, die auffälliger sind, drohen die GAS zu verdecken. Nicht zuletzt bestehen Unsicherheiten, wie die geeignete Behandlung aussieht, und die Erfolge sind geringer als bei vielen anderen Angststörungen.
