In der Schweiz beklagen 15–20% der Patienten Einschlafstörungen, ebenso 15–20% Durchschlafstörungen. Entsprechend gehören Schlafstörungen zu den Krankheitsbildern, die in der Praxis von Grundversorgern, jedoch auch von Psychologen und Psychiatern am häufigsten angetroffen werden. Müdigkeit, Antriebsstörung und Energiemangel werden von vielen weiteren Patienten beklagt und führen zu Konsultationen von Ärzten und Psychologen und Inanspruchnahme des Gesundheitssystems. Auch diese Symptome können häufig mit einer gestörten Erholungsfunktion in der Nacht in Verbindung gebracht werden, wobei häufiger eine Korrelation als eine kausale Beziehung besteht. Die Relevanz von Schlafstörungen lässt auch erkennen, wer den Konsum an Hypnotika als Gradmesser heranzieht. Hypnotika werden von einem Drittel bis zur Hälfte der Bevölkerung konsumiert. Früher stammten die Hypnotika vor allem aus der Gruppe der Benzodiazepine. Heute stammen sie zusätzlich aus verwandten Stoffgruppen oder auch aus pflanzlichen und homöopathischen Präparaten.
