Die Anorexia nervosa (AN) hat seit den frühen Kasuistikenvon Richard Morton und den folgenden detaillierten Ersbeschreibungen in den Jahren 1873/74 durch den damals berühmten britischen Arzt Sir William Gull und den nicht weniger bekannten Franzosen Charles Laségue nichts von ihrer Faszination verloren. Allerdings waren sich bereits die beiden Erstbeschreiber uneinig in der Einschätzung des Verlaufs. Der Brite Gull schilderte den Verlauf für das Gros der Patienten eher optimistisch. Laségue hingegen vertrat schon damals die Meinung, dass, falls das Krankheitsbild bereits mehrere Wochen andauere, der Verlauf häufig chronisch ende.
