Die Anorexia nervosa (AN) oder deutsch „Pubertätsmagersucht“ — ist die dritthäufigste chronische Erkrankung der weiblichen Adoleszenz. Die Klassifikation der kindlichen und jugendlichen AN erfolgt entsprechend den Kriterien von ICD-10 bzw. DSMIV. ICD-10 legt einen Body-Mass-Index-(BMI-) Schwellenwert von 17,5 kg/m2 als Gewichtskriterium fest. Aufgrund der Alters-und Geschlechtsabhängigkeit des BMI entspricht jedoch dieser in der Altersgruppe der 10-bis 12-Jährigen etwa der 50. Altersperzentile, bei 13-jährigen Mädchen der 25. Altersperzentile. Ein solcher Schwellenwert erweist sich demnach für die Definition präpuberaler und puberaler Formen der AN als inadäquat.
