Es gibt eine Vielzahl von theoretischen Modellen, die versuchen, die Entstehung von Essstörungen zu erklären. Ein einheitliches, empirisch belegtes Modell zur Pathogenese und Aufrechterhaltung der Anorexia nervosa (AN) und Bulimia nervosa (BN) existiert jedoch nicht. Im Sinne eines heuristischen Konzepts liegt verhaltensthe rapeutischen ätiologischen Vorstellungen ein multifaktorielles Modell zugrunde, bei dem drei wesentliche Klassen von „Ursachen“ eine Rolle spielen: prädisponierende, auslösende und aufrechterhaltende Faktoren (⊡ Übersicht).
