Verletzte Patienten, die nach schweren Unfällen, körperlichen Angriffen oder Überfällen in die Notaufnahme einer Klinik kommen, haben ein beachtliches Risiko, langfristig psychiatrische Symptome zu entwickeln. Es hat sich gezeigt, dass im späteren Verlauf bei 10–17% dieser Patienten die Diagnose einer posttraumatischen Belastungsstörung (PTBS) oder einer Depression gestellt wird (Everly et al. 1999; (O’Donnell et al. 2004; Yehuda et al. 1998). Charakteristisch für die PTBS sind Symptome der Intrusion wie Flashbacks und Albträume, die mit dem traumatischen Erlebnis in Beziehung stehen, Symptome der Vermeidung, z. B. das Meiden von Plätzen und Aktivitäten, die an das traumatische Ereignis erinnern, sowie Symptome der Übererregung, die sich in Schlaf- und Konzentrationsstörungen sowie einer erhöhten Reizbarkeit äußern können (American Psychiatric Association 1994).
