Obgleich „binge-eating“ bereits 1959 von Stunkard (Stunkard 1959) als Symptom identifiziert wurde, wurde das Syndrom der „Binge-Eating-Störung“ („binge eating disorder“; BED) noch nicht als offizielle Diagnose anerkannt und wird im DSM-IV-TR (American Psychiatric Association 2000) als Syndrom bezeichnet, für das noch weitere Studien erforderlich sind. Die BED weist einige Gemeinsamkeiten mit Bulimia nervosa (BN) auf, vor allem in Hinblick auf die Kerndefinition von Essanfällen und die als Diagnosekriterium geforderte Auftretenshäufigkeit dieses Verhaltens. Zur Definition eines Essanfalls gehört das Essen von ungewöhnlich großen Nahrungsmengen in Verbindung mit dem Gefühl des Kontrollverlusts. Zwar wird als Häufigkeitskriterium „zweimal wöchentlich“ genannt, doch wird dieses Kriterium von der Literatur über BN nicht unbedingt gestützt und wurde für die BED noch nicht validiert (Berkman et al. 2007).
