Essstörungen treten besonders häufig in der Adoleszenz sowie im frühen Erwachsenenalter auf. Doch gerade diese jungen Patientinnen scheuen sich oft davor, bei gesundheitlichen Problemen einen Arzt oder Therapeuten aufzusuchen Oliver et al. 2005). (Da Essstörungen vorwiegend bei Frauen auftreten, wird im Folgenden stets die weibliche Form verwendet; die männliche formist gleichermaßengemeint.) Gleichzeitig nutzt gerade diese Altersgruppe den Computer und das Internet ausgesprochen häufig und ist daher sehr gut mit diesem Medium vertraut. Beispielsweise nutzten in Deutschland im ersten Quartal 2006 etwa 92% der 10- bis 25-Jährigen das Internet (Statistisches Bundesamt Deutschland 2007). Insofern erscheint es besonders bei diesem Störungsbild lohnend, eine speziell für die Vermittlung über das Internet und den Computer gestaltete Selbsthilfe anzubieten.
