Auszug
Aggregatdatenanalysen sind Untersuchungen, die ihre Informationen auf Grundlage einer Zusammenfassung von Informationen erlangen und zumeist eine größere Analyseeinheit umfassen. Im überwiegenden Maße stellen Staaten die Analyseeinheit dar, allerdings lassen sich auch Aggregatdatenanalysen auf subnationaler (etwa der Vergleich von Bundesländern, Kantonen, Wahlkreisen u.ä.) oder regionaler Ebene durchführen. Typische Aggregatdaten sind beispielsweise die Arbeitslosenquote, das Bruttosozialprodukt oder die Regierungsstärke von politischen Parteienfamilien — etwa gemessen aufgrund der Tage, an denen eine Parteienfamilie in der Nachkriegszeit an der Regierung war. Das Prinzip der Aggregatdatenanalyse besteht nun darin zu untersuchen, wie diese Größen miteinander in Beziehung stehen. So kann der Zusammenhang zwischen sozialdemokratischer Regierungsbeteilung in hoch entwickelten Industrienationen und dem Wirtschaftswachstum oder der Arbeitslosigkeit bestimmt werden. Problematisch ist bei solchen Zusammenhangsanalysen, die Ursache-Wirkungsketten zu bestimmen, was wissenschaftlich als Kausalität bezeichnet wird. Aber dieses Problem ist jeder Methode eigen: Aus Methoden können keine Begründungen abgeleitet werden, sie können diese nur mehr oder weniger plausibel erscheinen lassen (Faure 1994: 313).
