Der Vergleich wurde von Massing als „Königsweg“ der Politikwissenschaft bezeichnet (Massing 1969: 286). Swanson ging sogar noch weiter: „Thinking without comparison is unthinkable. And, in the absence of comparison, so is all scientific thought and scientific research“ (Swanson 1971: 145). Solche Aussagen sind zwar sehr überschwänglich, der Informationsgehalt ist aber relativ gering. Beschäftigt man sich mit der Methodik des Vergleichs, so stellen sich grundsätzliche Fragen. Warum soll man vergleichen? Wie soll man vergleichen?
