Makroquantitative Forschungsdesigns haben in den letzten zwei bis drei Dezennien enorm an Popularität gewonnen. Die Zahl der Publikationen, deren empirische Grundlage statistische Daten aus den Archiven der OECD, EU, Weltbank oder UNO bilden, ist nahezu unüberschaubar geworden und die an die quantitative Analyse dieser Daten gestellten Ansprüche sind massiv gestiegen. Dieser Prozess der Quantifizierung der Analyse auf der Basis von Makrodaten wurde insbesondere in der vergleichenden politischen Ökonomie vorangetrieben (Schmidt 1995; Obinger/Wagschal/Kittel 2003), wird aber auch in vielen anderen Bereichen der vergleichenden Politikwissenschaft angewendet (Berg-Schlosser/ Müller-Rommel 2003).
