Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases are well suited for minimally invasive surgical approaches. Laparoscopic techniques are varied and differ depending on surgeon experience, severity of disease, and other patient characteristics. Laparoscopic (and now robotic) rectal surgery requires a higher level of experience and skill set over more common procedures. Many studies have proven that minimally invasive techniques for inflammatory bowel diseases can be performed safely and effectively with the same or better short- and long-term outcomes as compared to open surgery. This review highlights laparoscopic techniques used for inflammatory bowel disease of the rectum.
