Abstract

Diagnostic interpretation is not possible without optimal specimen preparation. This chapter on ‘Cytopreparatory Techniques’ discusses a variety of options available for serous fluid preparation and discusses optimal processing procedures. Sample preparation for immunochemical (IC) studies, microbiology evaluation, molecular testing (MT) and histochemical stains can be prepared at the same time as the cytologic specimen preparation. Cell blocks (CB) can produce multiple sections for performing ancillary testing. Histochemical stains, IC and MT can be performed on CB material. Cell blocks play a pivotal role in cytology and vary among laboratories internationally. This chapter also describes various CB techniques used in cytopathology, along with their advantages and disadvantages.
