Abstract

The study of systematic entities and their relationships at all levels of hierarchical representation, especially of insects (Hennig 1966; Engel and Kristensen 2013), in a Darwinian evolutionary context (Eldridge and Cracraft 1980; Wheeler et al. 2001; Wheeler 2008) is unfolding into a large and diversified scientific field. It now includes morphology, ecology, physiology and evolutionary pathways (Belles 2017), as well as different molecular methods (Bleidorn 2017) and advanced information technology (IT) methods (Felsenstein 2004). This has led to significant additions in the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, increased publishing in ZooKeys (Erwin et al. 2012), a publication series on taxon naming criteria (TNC) and the discussion of the problems connected to it by Vences et al. (2013).
