Abstract
The beneficial effects of physical exercise on glucose metabolism in diabetic patients were documented already before the discovery of insulin. Thus, in a treatise on dietary regulation in the treatment of diabetes, Allen and colleagues (1919) described an association between exercise and reduced levels of sugar in blood and urine, as well as increased carbohydrate tolerance. Subsequent studies have shown that exercise also enhances the hypoglycaemic effect of injected insulin (Lawrence, 1926) and increases the rate of insulin-stimulated glucose disposal in diabetic patients (Wallberg-Henriksson et al., 1982; Koivisto and DeFronzo, 1984; Krotkiewski et al., 1985; Devlin et al., 1987). In addition, the insulin response to ingested glucose in diabetic patients with endogenous insulin secretion has been shown to be blunted following physical training (Rogers et al., 1988; Eriksson and Lindgärde, 1991).
