Abstract
Thoracic injuries are common, occurring in up to one third of all trauma victims. A systematic approach to these patients is necessary to minimize morbidity and mortality. Upon arrival, vital signs are obtained, supplemental oxygen and pulse oxymetry are established, venous access is obtained, and electrocardiogram leads are placed. These general interventions are critical in patients with penetrating lung injuries as our institution and several others have shown that presenting physiologic parameters such as systolic blood pressure (SBP) and temperature are better predictors of outcome than the anatomic injury itself.
