Abstract
It is my great honor and pleasure to receive the first Claes H. Dohlman award at this, the Third International Conference on the Lacrimal Gland, Tear Film and Dry Eye Syndromes. I would like to sincerely thank all those involved in my selection as the recipient. I feel particularly honored because between 1985–1987 I had a corneal fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, where Professor Dohlman was the Chairman and my professor (Fig. 1). During my time there, Dr. Kenneth R. Kenyon and Dr. Scheffer Tseng were performing dry eye research and asked me to volunteer for the Schirmer test. I was very surprised to learn that the results of my Schirmer test were 0 mm. The next day I performed the test on myself, and the results confirmed that my Schirmer test was definitely 0 mm in both eyes. My only symptom at the time was “ocular fatigue”, and I never experienced any sensation of dryness. As a result of the tests, I was placed in the dry eye group instead of being a normal control, as I had expected. It was then that I resolved to conduct dry eye research for my own benefit and as well as for others.
