Abstract
Diffuse advanced peritoneal carcinomatosis with malignant ascites leads to a rapid deterioration of patients general conditions and changes the quality of life for the worse. Only a few publications deal with the natural history of peritoneal carcinomatosis. The median survival for patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis, especially in combination with malignant ascites, is short: 1.5 months for pancreatic cancer patients, 2.5–4.0 months for gastric cancer patients, and 4.0–6.0 months for colon cancer patients. In contrast to the well-known superior median survival time in ovarian cancer stage FIGO III, a subgroup of patients with gross peritoneal carcinomatosis and malignant ascites will not survive more than 4.4 months.
