Peritoneal Carcinomatosis: Principles of Management

Abstract

Reliable and sensitive detection of metastasis is critical to establishing accurate staging and to designing effective therapies for patients with colon carcinoma. Preoperative techniques, such as computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), have increased the ability of the surgeon to detect dissemination of disease. During surgery, the surgeon relies mostly on direct palpation and inspection in order to identify tumor and assess the completeness of resection.
