Abstract

The kidneys and adrenal glands reside within the perirenal space, a subdivision of the extraperitoneum formed by the anterior and posterior renal fascia. The posterior renal fascia was first described by Zuckerkandl and the anterior renal fascia by Gerota, but the two layers are known collectively as Gerota's fascia.1 These two layers fuse posterior to the colon, forming the lateroconal fascia, which continues around the flank blending with the peritoneal reflection. These fascial relationships define the extraperitoneal compartments.2
