Zusammenfassung
Die Lebensqualität von Tumorpatienten im fortgeschrittenen Stadium kann sowohl durch eine breite Palette an tumorbedingten Symptomen, als auch durch therapiebedingte Nebenwirkungen (oder Komplikationen) kompromittiert werden. Obwohl vor allem für viele Ärzte die Notwendigkeit einer effektiven Schmerztherapie im Mittelpunkt palliativer Therapiekonzepte steht, empfinden betroffene Patienten häufig andere Symptome (und meist Fatigue) als weitaus belastender.
Durch ganzheitliche Sichtweise ausgebildeter und kompetenter Tumortherapeuten und Anwendung eines breiten Spektrums von Supportivmaßnahmen kann die Lebensqualität der Patienten selbst unter einer laufenden intensiven Chemotherapie lange zeit hoch gehalten werden. Abhängig von der Länge der Erkrankungsdauer werden krankheitsorientierte (kausale) Therapiekonzepte zuweilen zugunsten symptomatischer Palliativmaßnahmen in den Hintergrund treten, in der Endphase von Tumorerkrankungen wird eine patientenzentrierte Palliative Care (End of life care) unter Vermeidung einer Verlängerung des Leidens Priorität haben. Optimale Ergebnisse setzen jedoch ein interdisziplinär zusammengesetztes und laufend zu schulendes Behandlungsteam von Ärzten, Schwestern, Seelsorgern und Psychologen voraus.
