Abstract
Abstract. The quality of a child's attachment to his/her caregivers has proved its worth as a major predictor of social-emotional adaptation. During the time span from preschool to early school years attachment can be assessed both on a behavioral and a representational level. New studies substantiate the expectation that children with secure attachment will demonstrate less problem behavior compared to those with insecure attachment. Findings of the Duesseldorf longitudinal study support this assumption. In a sample of 66 5-year-old children, attachment behavior was observed in the Strange Situation with the mother; 1,5 years later attachment representations were assessed by means of a story completion task. Mothers rated the child's behavior using the Social Behavior Questionnaire, CBCL, and the TRF. The two attachment measures were linked significantly. As expected, mothers and teachers rated the attachment groups differently with respect to problem behavior; their ratings concerning externalizing and internalizing problems varied. The largest differences in problem behavior were observed between disorganized and secure attachment. Overall, membership to one of the attachment groups accounted for 15 % and 10 % of the total variance of the problem behavior as rated by mothers and by teachers, respectively. Results emphasize the necessity for early preventive parenting training.
