Zusammenfassung
Essstörungen sind sehr seltene Erkrankungen bei Männern, die nicht nur im jungen, sondern auch höheren Alter auftreten können. Sie zeigen zum Teil gleiche, aber auch unterschiedliche Symptome (vor allem bei Anorexia nervosa und Bulimia nervosa) wie betroffene Frauen. Typisch sind ein prämorbides Übergewicht, extreme Körperunzufriedenheit und ein erhöhter Anteil an Homo- bzw. Bisexualität. Die nach wie vor starke weibliche Assoziation von gestörtem Essverhalten führt dazu, dass männliche Betroffene ihre Symptome oft verleugnen und folglich nicht in Behandlung gehen. Auf professioneller Seite kommt es oft zum Verkennen der Symptome bzw. zu Fehldiagnosen. Die Binge-Eating-Störung als dritte offizielle Essstörung hat einen deutlich höheren Männeranteil als Anorexia und Bulimia nervosa und ist häufig mit Übergewicht assoziiert. „Muscularity oriented disordered eating“ zeigt sich als neue männerspezifische Form der Essstörung.
