Zusammenfassung
Das Kapitel fasst die Ergebnisse aus empirischen Studien zusammen und setzt sie in den Kontext der empirischen Forschung. Zur Bulimia nervosa gibt es eine größere Anzahl von Befunden zum kurz- bis mittelfristigen, wenige jedoch zum langfristigen Verlauf. Weniger ist zum Verlauf der Binge-Eating-Störung bekannt. Beide Essstörungen weisen langfristig ein sehr ähnliches Verlaufsergebnis auf, auch wenn der kurzzeitige Verlauf der BES etwas besser ist. Der Verlauf bei Männern unterscheidet sich nicht nennenswert von dem bei Frauen. Das Vorliegen weiterer psychischer Erkrankungen (Komorbidität) verschlechtert die Prognose beider Essstörungen.
