Zusammenfassung

Schon im 17. Jahrhundert hat die von der Beobachtung geprägte und den Naturwissenschaften verpflichtete Medizin in Großbritannien herausragende Vertreter, wie Thomas Willis (1621–1675), Francis Glisson (1597–1677) und Thomas Sydenham (1624–1689). Im 18. Jahrhundert werden die berühmten Hospitäler gegründet, die für die Entwicklung der wissenschaftlichen Medizin in Großbritannien von ausschlaggebender Bedeutung sind. In der Zeit zwischen 1700 und 1825 entstehen auf den britischen Inseln nicht weniger als 154 Hospitäler, im gleichen Zeitraum verdoppelt sich die Bevölkerung von ca. 7 auf 15 Millionen Einwohner.1
