Die frühe Geschichte der Medizin Nordamerikas ist von der stürmischen Entwicklung einer jungen Nation und von Pionieren wie Daniel Drake (1785–1852) oder William Beaumont (1785–1853) geprägt. Es gilt, die täglichen Herausforderungen der ärztlichen Praxis zu bestehen. Für theoretische Systeme der Naturforschung und der Medizin besteht kein Bedürfnis. Henry E. Sigerist hat dies in seiner Medizingeschichte Amerikas1 eindrucksvoll beschrieben. Die Nation wächst und benötigt Ärzte! So schießen Medizinschulen wie Pilze aus dem Boden:
