The Structure and Classification of Mites

  • Chapter
Arthropods and Human Skin

Abstract

Mites are members of the order Acarina of the class Arachnida and are in general less well known to the medical profession than are insects such as mosquitoes, fleas, bedbugs and bees, with the notable exception of Sarcoptes scabiei. Some details of their structure and classification are therefore not out of place. Apart from being important vectors of several infectious diseases, they can cause a great deal of cutaneous problems in man through their own efforts.
