Publication History

Publication Date:
02 November 2004 (online)

Studies on the endoscopic management of gastrointestinal bleeding are concentrating mainly on either evaluating already established techniques, with assessment of outcome - for example, band ligation and argon plasma coagulation - or on refining more recently introduced methods such as hemoclipping, or on exploring newer indications for known techniques, as with endoscopic ultrasonography. Of course, new devices to bridge diagnostic and therapeutic gaps in the field of gastrointestinal hemorrhage are also being introduced and subjected to preliminary trials - for example, the development of double-balloon enteroscopy and rotatable planar electrodes using radiofrequency for hemostasis. Continuing enthusiasm regarding capsule endoscopy is reflected by the large number of abstracts on this topic, as well as increasing interest in the study of small-bowel vascular lesions.
