Zusammenfassung

Obwohl die Geschichte zahlreiche Beispiele für beeinträchtigte geistige Gesundheit an der Spitze von Staaten mit zum Teil verheerenden Folgen kennt, ist diese Thematik verhältnismäßig selten Gegenstand der öffentlichen Diskussion. Welche Aufgabe bei der Beurteilung von Amtsfähigkeit Medizinern zukommt, ist umstritten. Aus der Sicht neurologisch und psychiatrisch tätiger Ärzte werden mehrere historische Beispiele vorgestellt und mögliche Standpunkte erörtert.

Abstract

Impaired mental abilities in state leaders are rarely the subject of public debate. But history reveals several examples, often with fatal consequences for a nation. It is controversial whether or not physicians should be heard in the assessment of a politician's abilities. From a neurological and psychiatric point of view we present several cases and discuss possible strategies.
