My best case: homeopathic management of adverse effects of tamoxifen

Summary

Background

Nearly half of patients discontinue tamoxifen hormone therapy early because of side effects, thus increasing the risk of breast cancer recurrence. Could a homeopathic treatment improve compliance?

Methods

A patient suffering from side effects of tamoxifen was seen in consultation every 2 months for 10 months by a senior homeopathic doctor and a registrar.

Results

Case analysis and repertorisation led to the identification of Pulsatilla as the simillimum drug and tamoxifen 7c as the etiological treatment. This treatment resulted in a rapid and lasting improvement of all the symptoms.

Conclusions

The combination of a homeopathic medicine and a hetero-isotherapic illustrates both the principles of “similarity” and “the identical”. It has proved to be an excellent response to the side effects of tamoxifen. By enhancing the patient’s quality of life, this combined approach also improved adherence to treatment.

A hetero-isotherapic is a homeopathic dilution of an agent found outside the body, prepared from samples coming from the patient’s environment (dust, pollen, animal hair, food, cosmetics, chemical products, medicines). The word “isotherapic”, although less precise, can also be used. In both cases, the treatment follows the principle of identical, that is treating like with like.

The medical repertory is a listing of all known symptoms and homeopathic sensations. Nowadays digital versions make its use much faster.

Unicism is a homeopathic technique seeking to find one single medicine dealing with all the patient’s symptoms so as to kick start the body into a natural healing process.

A “dose” is a small tube containing approximately 200 globules measuring 1 mm in diameter. The contents of the whole tube are to be emptied in the mouth and allowed to dissolve outside meal times.

“Granules” are 3 mm in diameter. They are to be taken 3 at a time and allowed to dissolve in the mouth outside meal times.

Materia Medica is the toxicological and experimental collection of all the symptoms provoked on a healthy person by the experimentation of the substances used in homeopathy (pathogenesis).

The constitutional remedy is the true “simillimum” of the patient, that is to say that it is similar to the patient’s reactions to an illness both physically and psychologically and which, above all, leads to healing.
