Regional anesthesia is a good alternative to general anesthesia in pediatric surgery: Experience in 1,554 children☆
Section snippets
Materials and methods
The analyses of 1,459 caudal and 95 spinal block cases collected until January 2001 in children from newborn to 12 years of age are documented retrospectively.
The fasting period before the CB for children up to 6 months was 4 hours, and older children fasted for 6 hours. The blood pessure, heart rate, end tidal CO2, and arterial oxygen saturations in all patients were recorded and monitored continuously from the fifth minute of CB and throughout surgery. All the patients between 6 months and 6
Results
The mean ages of the patients were 31.15 months (SEM, 0.89), and 111 patients were neonates (Fig 1).Distribution of the types of anesthesia given to the patients is depicted in Table 1. Discussion
General anesthesia frequently may cause hypotension in newborns, especially if hypovolemia, sepsis, respiratory insufficiency, or cardiovascular immaturity is present. Hypothermia, hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, or persistent pulmonary hypertension also may be observed in newborns.7 During anesthesia induction or tracheal intubations, GA may induce abnormal hemodynamic responses like hypo- or hypertension in older children. However, intra- or postoperative hormonal and

Correlation of Block Success with Perfusion Index Measurement in Cases of Pediatric Surgery Under Caudal Epidural Block Anesthesia
2024, Journal of Perianesthesia NursingIncidence of urethrocutaneous fistula following distal hypospadias repair with and without caudal epidural block: A randomized pilot study
2022, Journal of Pediatric UrologyCitation Excerpt :Children in both the groups were followed up monthly for 3-months, then at 6-months and subsequently at 1-year interval in paediatric surgery OPD to assess for development of UCF. The latter was defined as an abnormal communication between the reconstructed urethra and the skin that was located between the original meatus and the tip of glans, causing urine leakage [9]. Any other complications such as meatal stenosis and glans dehiscence or flap necrosis were also looked for.
Can regional anesthesia have an effect on surgical outcomes in patients undergoing distal hypospadia surgery?
2017, Journal of Pediatric UrologyCitation Excerpt :Caudal anesthesia is widely used by pediatric anesthesiologists because of its safety, simplicity, and cost-effectiveness [22]. In some centers, it has become almost the standard of care for genital surgery in children [22,23]. Without a doubt, the versatility of caudal blockage in terms of safety and pain control after lower body surgery is undeniable [24].
