Similarly, a randomized controlled study of sleeve gastrectomy versus best medical care in obese patients with stages 3–4 CKD found that the intervention increased serum adiponectin at 12 months [26]. Among a small cohort of 25 kidney transplant recipients and 15 age-matched non dialysis patients with CKD stage 3 who participated in a 12-week supervised exercise program with short cell phone text reminds, serum adiponectin increased substantially in the transplant group but not among those with CKD [27].
The impact of sleeve gastrectomy on renal function in patients with chronic kidney disease varies with severity of renal insufficiency

However, a randomized control trial with a limited number of patients with CKD stage 3 and 4 found that eGFR, when adjusted for weight, did not improve after surgery compared with patients who did not undergo surgery [23]. On the contrary, Imam et al. [2] performed a retrospective review of patients with various stages of CKD who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or LSG and found that patients who underwent surgery had overall higher eGFR than matched controls who did not undergo surgery.
